David Hancock, PhD

Biography: David is the owner of A Focused Mind Sports Consulting. His areas of expertise include goal setting, maintaining focus, managing competitive anxiety, and achieving peak performance. He has a passion for sports at all levels, and has been a hockey referee for over 20 years. David is also an Associate Professor in the School of Human Kinetics at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL, Canada. He teaches Sport Psychology, Coaching, Growth & Development, and Sociology of Sport. His main research priorities include sport officials and youth sport. David was born and raised in Ontario, attending Laurentian University (BA Hons, Sport Psychology; MA, Human Development) and University of Ottawa (PhD, Human Kinetics). He completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Queen’s University, before taking a position as an Assistant Professor at Indiana University. David now lives in Torbay, NL with his wife, son, and dog.

Erin McGowan, PhD
Mental Performance Consultant
Professional Affiliations: Associate Professor, School of Human Kinetics and Recreation, Memorial University
Biography: Dr. Erin McGowan is a Faculty member in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Dr. McGowan has an undergraduate degree in Human Kinetics from the University of Ottawa, a master’s degree in Kinesiology (Sport Psychology) from Memorial University, and a doctorate in Kinesiology (Exercise and Health Psychology) from Western. She has expertise in individual and team performance and has worked with athletes with and without physical impairments. Over the past 17 years, Dr. McGowan has worked with numerous high performance and developmental athletes in a variety of sports, such as curling, soccer, basketball, rowing, sailing, cycling, and Boccia (to only name a few). She is dedicated to helping athletes achieve their potential by teaching them skills and strategies to realize their goals, change their behaviours, and achieve athletic success.
Erin loves running, basketball, hiking with her family, and exploring the outdoors.
